Winter this year has been colder than it has been in decades in most parts of the world, and the electricity bills always seems to be skyrocketing during this time due to excess use of household electronics, heating devices and lighting due to limited hours of daylight outside compared to the rest of the year. Some love it, others hate it. One thing we should all have in common though, is reducing our electricity bills during these months, and why not save our ozone in the process? Here are just some useful ideas to help you through the cold months:

Invest in energy-efficient devices

As a majority of our time is spent inside, electrical appliances are the quite obviously the main cause of high bills at the end of the month. There are a number of ways to limit the use of electricity without having to sit in the darkness without being able to switch on your television or computer. Don’t worry, I am not talking about playing cards by candlelight.

When it comes to saving the planet, few people realize the effects of some electronics that do not switch off completely, for example; devices that still have the “clock feature” or something similar running after the device is switched off, which causes power plants to emit an excess of gasses into the air that causes unnecessary pollution while you are asleep.

Replacing your old items, or adjusting your buying habit with energy-efficient devices can save a lot of energy and reduce bills, more than you might realize. Be on the lookout for products carrying an “energy star” label, which is a direct indication of an efficient energy saving device.

Gas heating and cooking

The main causes of having to reach deep into your pockets at the end of the month during winter times are appliances such as heaters, ovens, gas stoves, and anything of the sort. Although it is needed, it is advisable to replace your gas with natural gas which is less harmful to the air and your own personal health, as many heating devices produce toxins in the air without warning or visible signs. You cannot go wrong with natural products, or gas for that matter.

Energy saving light bulbs

This is a very easy way to save money and electricity, while also limiting the emission of poisonous gasses by power plants. Having replaced my own personal home with these light bulbs, I can tell you that they are just as bright as your conventional bulbs, if not brighter, without much difference in cost.

This is the quickest, easiest and most affordable way to save money this winter, all the while playing a part in limiting the production of harmful gasses into our air.

Keep warm and keep well

One last thing I want to mention before I leave you to go have a warm cup of tea or coffee (which is exactly what I plan on doing after this), is to get all those warm blankets out, and store away the heating blankets that turns your bed into a sun bed in some cases. Even though it is great to have a nice warm bed to climb into at night, a water heating bag is a far better option when it comes to saving energy and money. They do the same job, although not always all throughout the night. Even better, just use an extra blanket, body heat is a wonderful and very effective way of staying warm. (Laughs)

Encouraging and enforcing the use of eco-friendly products are what’s going to make your children, and your children’s children wake up every day to a beautiful sky, fresh air, and healthy natural food and water to consume. Have you ever taken a look at the labels on the cleaning products under your sink?  Have you noticed that most of the ingredients have completely unpronounceable names and that in most cases, the instructions about what to do if someone accidentally ingests them include rushing to an emergency room?

That is because unlike natural cleaning products, most of the stuff that you are using to clean your home contain potentially deadly chemicals, which should be kept under lock and key – not used liberally on items that you eat from and use!

The simple answer for anyone who does not want to willingly expose themselves, their families and their pets to what are, in many cases, poison, is to opt for natural cleaning products, but there are a few more reasons to choose this option:

• It is cheaper.  Let us face it – keeping some baking soda, vinegar and lemon around the house is a whole lot easier than trying to keep your cabinets stocked with all the creams, liquids and sprays that manufacturers of chemical cleaners want you to!
• It is better for the environment.  Whether you choose to make your own natural cleaning products, or to buy natural products made by another company, you can safely say that when you rinse that cleaning product down your drain, into the sewage system, and into a treatment plant (or the sea) it is not going to kill animals or plants!
• Readily available.  If you are still using commercial cleaning products, you have probably noticed that they are pretty specific these days.  Instead of regular old bleach, these days they have gel formulas, formulas for dark clothes, formulas for cleaning, for washing, and so on. Heaven forbid that the store runs out of the product you need!  On the other hand, when you use eco friendly cleaning products, they are as close as your kitchen cabinets when you need them.
• They smell good, and they work brilliantly.  Have you ever wondered JUST how much perfume manufacturers of cleaning products have to add to a chemical detergent to mask the smell of those chemicals?  If you love a lemon scent, why not USE a lemon?  Likewise, many commercial products just do not do the job the way you would like them to, so you end up using more.  Natural products are not watered down, they are pure, and so you use less to get better results.
• They’re safe. You’ve never heard of someone dying from lemon poisoning have you? Or from fish in a river dying from exposure to vinegar! Well natural cleaning products are usually based on substances that are not only safe, but that you could even eat if you wanted to! You don’t get safer than that.

Whether it’s for financial reasons, because you like the smell of real, natural cleaning aids, or because you don’t want to expose your family (and the planet) to any more toxins than there are already out there, natural cleaning products really are the way to go!

It is that time of year again; that we all start to think about what we can do to improve ourselves.  Some of us vow to go to the gym more often (or at all); others decide that THIS year will finally be the year that we ask for that big raise.

Some of us may even stick to those resolutions, and that is great, but why not make a resolution this year that means a little more to the planet and to everyone else on it.

Yup, I am talking about lowering your carbon footprint.  If you groan at the thought of having to trade in your car, because you love it, or shudder at the thought of avoiding air conditioners, then don’t worry – I’ve got five easy resolutions that you can make, that will help to impact on the planet’s well being, and won’t make your life unbearable.

1. Buy Local

There is a good chance that you are already buying organically grown produce – that is great for your health!  However, if that organic food has to travel half way around the world to reach you, and is packaged in plastic and other environmental nasties, there is a good chance that its carbon footprint is as high, or higher, than the ordinary stuff in the grocery store. Make buying local produce, which is in season, and packaged minimally at all, your new year’s resolution!

2. Buy a Water Filter, and Forget Bottled Water!

Another carbon footprint killer that most people do not give a second thought is bottled water. Sure, it is trendy to drink the latest brand, which is bottled at source in the Outer Hebrides, but have you ever considered just how much fuel is burned to transport that water to you? A charcoal water filter fitted in your kitchen, or even a filter jug, will give you pure, clean water, and there is no cost to the environment! Plus, if you use reusable bottles, you are putting less strain on landfills too!

3. Run an Energy Efficient Home

Not everyone can afford to convert to solar or wind power. Everyone, however, can ensure that their windows and doors seal properly, keeping heating and cooling in. They can install proper insulation, even if it is only around the hot water heater to save on energy costs, and everyone can afford to swap their old incandescent light bulbs for energy savers. Not only are you doing the planet a favour, but each energy saver bulb also costs around 75% less to run!

4. Avoid Convenience Foods

Not only are convenience foods proven to be bad for your health, they are bad for the planet too! Not only are they packaged to within an inch of their lives, they are also frozen, transported, refrigerated, displayed and more. All of which requires carbon, and all of which increase your carbon footprint. Cooking your own food, at home, is better for you, and for the environment!

5. Keep Your Garden Indigenous

There is a reason that certain plants grow in certain areas – it has to do with the climate. However, quite aside from the fact that ‘foreign’ plants are likely to need a lot more water, fertilisers, and care than those that are local, all those exotic plants also have to be transported to your local garden center. Either that or they have to be carefully grown in controlled environments, all of which add up to a high carbon footprint!

Easy Does It

As you can see, there are plenty of small ways you can help to make your carbon footprint a little smaller this year, and none of them needs to be scary or painful.

You are also more likely to stick to your new years resolutions, whether they are for yourself or the environment, if you keep it simple.

Remember, these may seem like small, insignificant chances to you, but if thousands, hundreds of thousands or even millions of people make small changes, the world will be a very different place before you know it!

If only it were that easy to save our planet. However biodegradable plastic bags are certainly a good place to start.  In truth, no one knows how long it takes for a standard plastic trash bag to disintegrate – mostly because no one has been able to measure it.   Which means they truly could be around forever.  Even when the plastic is degradable (which is different than biodegradable), it never really goes away.  Scientists do know is those pieces of the ordinary and degradable plastic bags still linger.  These scraps can cause a real hazard especially in the ocean where they are eaten by sea animals and work their way up the food chain to humans.  Yick.

There are some new degradable plastics that do break down within a few weeks when exposed to the weather, but these aren’t biodegradable and are truly never gone later.  So what’s an eco friendly person supposed to do? Use paper?  We all know that’s almost as harmful as plastic.  And unless you’re able to sustain a 100% compostable and recycling household, we all have trash that needs to be thrown out on the curb.

Biodegradable trash bags, on the other hand, really do disappear.  Microorganisms break down biodegradable plastic into water, biomass and carbon dioxide without harmful chemical leftovers. Gotta love those little guys!  Unfortunately, you still have to be careful.  When biodegradable plastic bags break down without oxygen, which is hard to come by in a landfill, they emit methane, the dreaded greenhouse gas.

What then, is the best way to use biodegradable trash bags and save Mother Earth?  Well first of all, look for products with Biodegradable Products Institute Logo which means that the plastic product will truly break down and be digested by those microorganisms.   With the new degradable plastics mentioned above, a lot of people have jumped on the eco-friendly bandwagon and are making dubious claims about how well their plastic products will really degrade.  By looking for the words biodegradable or the Institute’s logo, you know you’ll be buying the “right” kind of plastic.   For now, true biodegradable plastics are found mostly in trash bags, eating utensils and food containers.

The true benefit of biodegradable trash bags comes when they are sent to a commercial composting facility.  The composting process allows enough oxygen and microbes to get to the bags so that truly “breaks down” and is digested away.

Even though much of residential trash doesn’t go to a commercial composting facility biodegradable trash bags really are a better option for an earth friendly way to dispose of garbage.  Hundreds, perhaps thousands of years from now, then the scientists decide to study 21^st century Earth, do you want to be remembered by the number of plastic trash bags?  Of course not.  So start doing Earth and posterity a favor and when asked for paper or plastic, answer, biodegradable plastic, please?

Before you start to thaw the turkey and set out the place mats and name cards (is my Grandma the only one that does that?), take some of these green tips into consideration so you can keep your holiday season green without adding a pinch of stress.

Localize your holiday dinner - Rather than heading to a giant grocery store and buying a giant frozen turkey and half-prepared side dishes, purchase locally grown and raised items instead. Many Farmer’s markets or local farms have fresh turkeys for sale, so you can buy one the morning of Thanksgiving and cook it that afternoon without having to go through the annoying thaw phase. Purchase your potatoes, veggies, fruits and pumpkins locally, too. Locally harvested products cost considerably less for you because there are no shipping or stocking fees, they’re greener because they require less transportation to get them to the grocery store, and on top of it all, you’ll be supporting local farmers and businesses. Locally grown and harvested foods are some of the healthiest, greenest and cost-effective purchases you can make.

Localize your decorations – Rather than buying an artificial tree and wreaths for decorations, purchase a real tree and real decorative wreaths from a local tree farmer that harvests the trees without the use of pesticides. Not only do these real items look and feel lush and attractive, but they’ll leave your home with a natural, cozy scent as well.

Aside from trees and wreaths, another way to decorate organically is to use handmade, reusable decorations. Local craft shows are a great place to find handmade items that are not mass produced and can be used for many years. Purchase some of these unique items instead of the cheap plastic mass-produced items at grocery stores. It’s another easy way to go green while supporting your community.

Purchase reusable or recycled dinnerware – Rather than using paper or plastic plates, silverware and place mats, use your regular dinnerware. While paper plates might be more convenient, investing in some nice holiday china will cut down on the costs you spend on disposable items and provide a more elegant feel for your dinner. If you have a large gathering and can’t justify the giant clean-up that will incur as a result of using regular plates, purchase plates and disposable items such as palm-leaf dinnerware or those made of other recycled products. Paper and plastic dinnerware are two of the most commonly wasted items, and one of the best ways for you to cut down on your environmental impact. Plus, palm-leaf dinnerware looks considerably more elegant than cheap plastic plates.

Make your own desserts – Instead of buying a store-bought pumpkin or apple pie, simply make your own. Those who have made a pie from scratch understand what a difference a warm, fresh pie makes. Purchase locally grown, pesticide-free apples, pumpkins or other pie fillings and use organic flours and sugars. Guests will be dying to get their hands on your delicious recipe and your house will smell like a bakery.

One of the greatest ways to stay green throughout the entire holiday season is to remember one thing – this time of the season is about people, not things. You don’t need an abundance of fancy decorations or expensive, fancy store-bought foods in order to make everyone happy. Natural items produced by Mother Nature herself and locally grown, handmade dishes and desserts will create a warm, comforting atmosphere for you and  your family. Soak in the joy of being with your loved ones and make everyone happy with delicious local foods and naturally luscious trees.
